Concrete rooftops are usually built for commercial use. But now flat concrete and shingles are gaining popularity among private homes. As much as it is getting popular due to its longer life compared to other roofing materials, there are few concerns that need attention. The biggest concern is the waterproof coating on concrete roofs to keep it safe and long lasting. Once a concrete house is waterproof, there is no need to worry about it for life. All you need to worry about is windows, doors and other elements of the house. This article is all about how to keep your concrete house waterproof. Let’s get started.

  1. Keep your roof clean:

Before proceeding further make sure your roof is clean. Clean all the debris and dirt with the help of a broom. Take your time and clean it deeply, any particle left behind can be the cause a waterproof sealer doesn’t work well with the walls or roof.

  1. Check for leakages:

First and foremost is to check for leakages, which can be a tough job. There are some types of concrete which are the best form of concrete and don’t require waterproof coating. Precast, core formed and insulated concrete wall doesn’t require an extra layer of protection.

If you feel the need that your walls or roof need waterproof coating to increase its life or a leakage appeared, call a general contractor to inspect what is the right solution for your house. Maybe a little liquid membrane is all your house need for protection.

  1. Fix minor repairs:

Concrete can have cracks and this can lead to leakage. But the good part is concrete is easy to fix and low maintenance. The cracks between concrete can erode the water between them, so it’s better to inspect first. Mark any area you find suspicious, put a masking tape on that spot so that you can identify it easily.

With the help of a silicone caulk gun, fill the cracks. To smooth the sealant use a putty knife and push the sealant in the hole so that it can fill in the space properly. Once you are sure that the sealant is filled, let it dry before proceeding further for the next step.

  1. Water proof coatings:

Usually a liquid membrane is enough to seal the concrete; this is just one way of waterproofing the house. It is either sprayed or rolled up into the concrete and left to dry. This method of waterproofing is relatively easy and cheap.

Self-adhering sheets on the other hand have enough coverage unlike liquid membrane. Just peel the sheet and place it into the concrete. These sheet membranes are thick and give a fine coating and protection to your house, but they are much more expensive than liquid membrane. Self-adhering sheets need to be handled with care; they are sticky and can stick to anything they come in contact with.

Exterior insulated finish systems are durable and easy to apply. The coating is done on the exterior side of the walls and fills all kinds of void and smooth the surface. EIFS gives a protective moisture resistance to the wall and keep the surface smooth.

Green method is another way of waterproofing. Sodium bentonite is used in it; usually you will find it in city dumps. It is used to avoid in dumping so that the liquid doesn’t leech into the soil. It is basically made up of clay and acts as a good waterproofing agent. The biggest quality of sodium bentonite is it covers smooth and uneven surfaces easily.
