Family in the dentist's office

Family dentistry is an important part of any family day-to-day, and you will need to know that everyone in the family is looked after to the highest standard. Here are our five top tips to making sure this is the case.

            1 – Look further afield

It can be hard to find good family dentistry when you are looking for a new place to go. This can be the case if you have moved to a new town, or if your favourite practice has closed for whatever reason.

Towns will usually have one family dentist with a good reputation, because the bad ones simply won’t last, but this means that the time taken to wait for an appointment may be too long for you.

It might not be the ideal situation, but looking to the next town or nearest city will help with this. It does mean having to travel, but if you tell your new family dentist that you have chosen them for all good reasons you might be able to fit the whole family into a day.

            2 – Read reviews

Private family dentistry is a huge business, and it is the best way to get the maintenance you need to stay healthy. However, the private industry means that there can be those practices which aren’t as reputable as others.

The easiest way to get rid of these places off your list of potential family dentists is to read reviews online. Google and Facebook are the best places for this, and most practices will be on these platforms.

Don’t simply look at the scores or star ratings, but read what people have really said about the practice. There may even be a single dentist at the practice who is particularly praised.

3 – Ask friends and family

If you have friends and family in the area that you are looking for your family dentistry, they are an invaluable source of information as to where to try and where to avoid.

If you are new to the area, heading to a local hot spot is the perfect opportunity to ask the locals the same questions, and make some new friends in the process.

4 – Make your feelings known

If you feel as though you have been let down by your family dentist, make your feelings known. They are there as a business to make money for their own, and you don’t owe them anything more than payment for a good service. If that service isn’t up to your standards, let them know, and they will endeavour to keep your business. You can then choose to accept, or move on somewhere else.

Similarly, if you have as good an experience as it is possible to have at the dentist, and have a good relationship with your practice, let them and the world know. This will help others who are in the same situation as you in the future.

            5 – Don’t settle

If the practice is close to home, but not as good as you would like it to be, or if it’s more affordable than the one you really want to use, don’t settle. Family dentistry is an important part of your family’s health from the youngest to the oldest, and it is essential that it is right for you. Spend that little more, or go that extra town over to get the family dentistry you deserve and need.
